The Top Five Video Game Series of All-Time (In No Particular Order)

I’ve played a decent amount of video games in my time, and one of my favorite things to do is run through an entire series of games. This list will prove that last sentence false, since my “favorites” are filled with games I haven’t completed yet, but I’m trying. Without further ado, here are my Top Five Video Game Series as of right now.

Grand Theft Auto

Grand Theft Auto is awesome. Whether you’re running through the satirical goodness of Grand Theft Auto V, or the early nineties adventure with CJ in San Andreas, the hours upon hours of entertainment these games provide is undeniable. There’s something heartwarming about picking up a prostitute, doing the dirty, and then viciously getting your funds back and driving off. These games are awesome, even down to the PSP titles. I’ve never touched the first two games in the series, but I’ve beaten most of the main series thus far. The side quests are great, the characters are great, and the flight mechanics are frustratingly well done. Also, GTA Online is something I dreamed of as a child, and it’s everything I ever wanted it to be. The series takes a bit of a dip with IV, but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. It’s a good game, Craig!!

Completed Titles: GTAIII,GTAIV,GTAV,GTA San Andreas, GTA Vice City

Favorite Title: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

Final Fantasy

Who can deny this series’ place among the greatest of all time? With more than 50 titles in the series, Final Fantasy has proven time and time again that JRPG’s aren’t going anywhere. From the classic turn based combat of the original trilogy to the action based dodge-fest that is Final Fantasy XV, this series has it all. Hell, there’s even a third person shooter title in the midst (though, it does rank dead last when compared to the rest of the series). The stories are always grand in scale, the characters are excellent, and the soundtracks are some of the most solid in video game history. There’s a reason the series has sold over 134 million copies worldwide, and that reason is because it’s fucking awesome. VII for the win!

Completed Titles: I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII,IX,X,XI,XII,XIII,XIV,XV, Interlude, After Years, Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, X-2, Last Mission, Revenant Wings, XIII-2, Lightning Returns, Tactics

Favorite Title: Final Fantasy VII

Metal Gear Solid

This is another excellently told, albeit confusing at times, series. Hideo Kojima is about as good a storyteller as humanly possible. I recently played through Metal Gear Solid for the second time, and I was floored at the amount of foreshadowing for the rest of the series. This guy had it all planned from the get-go, and man does it show. Whether you’re playing as Snake, Big Boss, or Raiden, the series is a complete blast. I haven’t as of yet played Revengance, IV, or V, but I still have a very special place for this series in my heart. From pull-ups in MGS2 to the mind-boggling changing camouflage suit in IV, this series knows business. If you haven’t given them a shot, I can’t reccomend them enough. The comedy/skull-fuckery throughout the series is palpable and worth every minute. Besides, MGS3 is quite possibly the greatest game of all time in just about every respect. The Metal Gear series has sold around 49 million units worldwide, making it one of the top selling series ever.

Completed Titles: MGS1, MGS2, MGS3

Favorite Title: Metal Gear Solid 3

Resident Evil

Oh yes. The only survival horror for me. Resident Evil 4 is one of the greatest games of all time, and nearly single-handedly guaranteed this series a place on this list. There are those who give the games shit for their tank controls and lack of moving while shooting (though 3 does allow this), their place atop the pile of Survival Horror is undeniable in my mind. Just when I thought a Resident Evil game could never touch the highs of Resident Evil 4, I bought Resident Evil 2 from a pawn shop. Resident Evil 2 is ALSO arguably one of the greatest games ever made. (There’s just something about games with ole Leon as the main.) There are still a few of these that I need to complete, including that pesky OG one, but the series is solidly in my top 5. With 75 million in total sales, I think it’s fair to say that just about every one of us knows about these games.

Completed Titles: RE2,RE3,RE4,RE5,Outbreak,Outbreak File2

Backlogged Titles: Resident Evil, REmake, RE6, Code Veronica, Dead Aim

Favorite Title: Tie between Resident Evil 2 and 4… I can’t decide!

God of War

God of War has a special place in my heart. Where else can I get my break-you-in-half action in a video game? As one of Sony’s best selling exclusive series, God of War has been my go-to hack n slash until I played DMC. The games are brutal, the Greek mythology is awesome, and the series is solid through and through. From the sexually themed minigames to the awesome array of weapons, God of War has a lot to offer. Hell, they even made what is arguably the best game on the PlayStation Portable with Chains of Olympus. The two games in the series that I have yet to play are Ascension and Ghost of Sparta. If you haven’t tried em yet, I couldn’t recommend them highly enough. Just don’t expect the combat to flow quite as well as Ninja Theory’s DMC. Their 22 million copies sold makes this series the least popular on the list, but it’s still enough to be the best selling hack n slash series to date.

Favorite Title: God of War 2
